Will pay per use save the planet?

The exponential growth of connectivity has had an enormous impact on our society in the last decade. It is widely understood that the increased connectivity between people, products and systems can create new sources of value for citizens and economies. Pay per use is a good example of this. You only pay for the use and not for owning a product or service. This will lead to less bulk sale and more reuse of products. Would applying this on a large scale justify us claiming that pay per use contributes to a circular economy and, consequently, a cleaner planet?
